Did Floyd Mayweather, in a way, help clean up the sport of boxing a bit with his demands?

Jose Martinez asked:
Do you think by requesting such testing demands, that Mayweather in a way helped clean up the sport by requesting Olympic style of testing?

I feel it has. More and more fighters are going to want Olympic-Style testing in place up until the point that such testing becomes mandatory. Your thoughts?

Let’s try to distinguish the fact that in Mayweather’s 40 fights career, he never, and I mean never demanded such consummate display of trying to prevent cheating. I know it’s a very notable fight he’s facing right now, very, but let’s reminiscence past great fights. All of it, if not all of it, almost all of it, didn’t undergone the Olympic style of testing for the reason of having two great fighters fight without and having a result of no excuses. Of course, there’s still excuses, but they loser will never say, “I lost, not to him [referring to the opponent who defeated him], but I was crushed by the steroids.”
This is what we need right now, revitalization of the boxing world. I mean, come on, Vargas was on steroids against De La Hoya, but he was knocked out because he thought steroids with make him more stronger, faster, and stable, but he was wronged, dead wronged.

It could be start. Boxing has gone a long way from its earlier reputation as the red light district of sports– a stigma it earned on account of the erstwhile underworld’s influence and control over fights held in some states and over some marquee boxers and the accusations of too much gambling and betting resulting in fixed fights or some fighters taking a dive. But now due to increasing cases of boxers being accused of and discovered as using steroids and banned substances to give them undue advantage over the opposition, boxing’s reputation is again under the cloud of doubt. It didn’t help that big-time boxing has remained almost exclusively in certain places specifically in the gambling capitals of Las Vegas and the Atlantic City where it has been suspected that big-time boxing promoters could influence or pressure supposed pro boxing authorities and the state commissions look the other way in cases related to drug/substance use or abuse by marquee boxers.
The Nevada State Commission has virtually found no case of drug/substance use by boxers in ages despite the fact that many celebrated boxers like Pryor and Mosley have fought many of their major fights there. By comparison the Olympic-style drug tests conducted by the USADA and other bodies have netted many including marquee athletes like Ben Johnson and Marion Jones and the members of certain surprisingly top performing Chinese track and field and swimming teams.
The demand of Floyd, himself a former Olympian and amateur standout, for stricter drug testing beginning with his high-profile match with Manny Pacquiao, is certainly a good start for boxing to redeem its credibility and continued viability.

His intentions are good but the timing is bad. Right now it only seems self-serving, with its only aim is protecting his unblemished record and not to the rest of the sport of boxing.
But if he would use this as a precedent to all of his next fights and he would be consistently demanding these kinds of tests not just for him but for all other sanctioned fights, then we could say that he is out to look after the welfare of all boxers and not just himself.
So let’s hope that he does make this his own personal advocacy from now on so other boxers ad promoters will join him in “his cause” to make boxing a safer sport.

He might have helped clean the sport but I’m almost positive that wasn’t his intention, Floyd wanted some sort of physiological advantage over Manny Pacqauio and I think he’s done it. From what I understand Manny has even decided to sue the Mayweather family because of the steroid allegations. If he wasn’t bother buy all this bad press he wouldn’t have done such a thing.
The Mayweather family has been around Boxing for a long time and they know the game inside and out, I wouldn’t be surprised if all this was just a stunt to get inside of Manny’s head. Rather people want to admit it or not its really started to raise some eyebrows about Manny Pacquaio.

I’m not going to call him a ducker but it shows that he’s always got an angle, it’s never straight
up with him, he can’t
just fight the top guys without having some kind of excuse not to. Why doesn’t he fight Shane, or Paul W., or Cotto? I’m sure he got an excuse for that. Look, not many people are going to want a needle stuck in their vein all the time, this is not like a tattoo where they go right under the skin.
Nobody here us a doctor so nobody here can tell you what kind of test is adequate, if a blood test is really full proofv like people been saying then it’s will be full proof after the fight too.

Look, you are ignoring the one step ahead theory. Do you know how many athletes (even in the olympics) are on steroids and don’t get caught? History proves this. Marion Jones is just one of so many examples. You can only test for substances that you know actually exist. The athletes with the most financial resources have therefore the greatest advantage. In cycling, the French are still furious about Lance Armstrong. They believe that he was on steroids throughout his career, but nothing was ever found. Many many other athletes took steroids and it only came out years later after they had already won. Of course, there are many more that never get caught.
So to answer your question, I think it will do very very little. Just look at sports like running (100m) and take a look at all the athletes that used steroids but still competed. The ones that never got caught are not even listed.
You can’t test for new drugs that you don’t know actually exist!!! It takes years to find out about those and then they already have new ones that will go undetected. People think that will make the sport clean because they are not aware of this fact.

No, his dad was a Cocaine user, why should we listen to his ridiculous speculations? If you ask me, i think the whole Mayweather family is on juice.

if steroids is not found in his system,
Mayweather JR. should demand a DNA test to make sure he is not from krypton and he is human.
and it shall be conducted ringside 5 minutes before Michael Buffer makes the intro.
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) should be the one to conduct the DNA test.

No…. It has not prove anything yet so far…. And even if Pacquiao submit to that testing… they will not find anything out of the ordinary. Mayweather is afraid of Pacquiao and this is his BEST DEFENSE to avoid the fight.

I think Normen nailed it.

Mayweather has done nothing but hurt the sport of boxing, and send fans running for MMA fights to see some action.

I appreciate Floyd’s stance here. Floyd Sr. kind of started all the trash talking, and so the topic wasn’t really handled in a dignified manner, but I don’t blame Floyd Jr. No one should have to fight an opponent who’s on a substance that gives them supernatural strength. Boxing is already a very dangerous sport, and there have been people that have been caught using the drugs, so it’s definitely happening. I think even Roy Jones messed around with something, and we all know about Sugar Shane. I’ve seen Floyd in an interview saying that he doesn’t admire fighters that have been in wars like the Ward-Gatti fights. Floyd never wants to have a torn lip, or facial fracture in order to win a fight. So this is why Floyd wants Pacquiao to be tested during training. It doesn’t make sense to Floyd to go through a possible grueling, physically damaging fight and then have his opponent fail the drug test after the fight. The physical damage would already have been done. The history of boxing has a lot of black eyes you know. From fights that were set up, and all forms of crooked politics. Boxers often times get the worst of it in many ways. This may help boxing for sure, but I know that Floyd is straight up looking out for himself, and I don’t have a problem with any fighter looking out for themselves. A lot of people make a lot of money off fighters, but no one’s risk is greater than the fighter. They can lose everything in that ring. Floyd is in a unique situation where so many people try to speak for him, and other peoples words get attributed to him. ANf Floyd talks a lot already, so when you get FLoyd Sr. talking and Roger too, then it all gets mixed up and chaotic. It’s kind of funny those guys.
